About Middle Beach Lodge
From
the time of original concept discussions a strong ambition was to "recycle" whenever
possible natures' building elements and return them to use in our prime
and verdant coastal location. Concurrently our vision was to preserve
as much of our natural surroundings as we carefully located our buildings.
Middle Beach Lodge "At the Beach"combines rustic West Coast architecture with heavy timber, wood frame buildings with classic board and batten cedar siding exterior. It was an interesting start to our ambition of offering a new style of Lodge accommodation on the West Coast of Vancouver Island. Warm comfortable sleeping accommodations coupled with exquisite oceanfront lounges in a decor of Rustic West Coast Simplicity. The use of recycled wood was utilized on this first phase where we collected timbers from such notable aged buildings as the Ogden Point Ice Plant in the Victoria harbour. These timbers were denailed, milled and re-created into fine furnishings including the dining room harvest tables, cabinetry, washstands, beds and side tables. Plank floors of Birch were used in the main lounge accompanied in the main living room by a massive river rock fireplace with rock that we hauled up from the Kennedy River just down the road from Long Beach. Many of the furnishings are an array of collectibles and antiques sourced from all parts of Canada. As one writer who visited us on numerous occasions said "Ralph Lauren would be happy here".
An exquisite architecture of land, sea and lodging, situated on a rocky headland off the West Coast of Vancouver Island.
With the knowledge gained from the Lodge "At The Beach", a two year lead up period was taken before moving to the location "At The Headlands". Extensive road work, site servicing, rock blasting, and remanicuring of the wild West Coast forest took place ahead of the main construction. The early and determined site efforts have today manifested in a Lodge with an advanced state of regenerated West Coast landscape. It has been said the buildings appear to have been dropped in from "the heavens above".
The heavy timbered "West Coast" buildings "At The Headlands" are a real expose' in the building use and recycling of old lumber. Core feature elements include flooring, ceiling beams, tables, lamps, beds, reception desks, kitchen cabinetry and the like, all built of fine edge grain fir that we ourselves remanufactured from hand picked timbers from old Victoria buildings. (The Andrew Sheret building and the Kelley Douglas building in Victoria provided truck loads of raw material that we worked our way through).
